Creating Excitement, Confidence, and Hope for Relapse Prevention

The Power of Positivity: Excitement, Confidence, and Hope in Relapse Prevention.

Maintaining long-term sobriety and preventing relapse requires more than just avoiding triggers and going to meetings.

Cultivating positive emotions and attitudes, such as excitement, confidence, and hope, plays a crucial role in a successful recovery journey.

In this blog post, we will explore how these positive elements contribute and are actually ESSENTIAL to relapse prevention.

EXCITEMENT: We MUST have new experiences and growth in our new lives.

Embracing excitement and new experiences invigorate your recovery journey, providing motivation and a sense of progress.

It helps shift your focus towards the future, setting goals, pursuing passions, and exploring new interests. Excitement builds resilience and distracts from temptations by diverting your attention towards fulfilling pursuits.

Suggestions: Go out to an expensive dinner, host a sober party, go on a road trip with people who don't annoy the shit out of you.

CONFIDENCE: Strengthening your belief in yourself and what you WANT.

“Confidence comes from recent past performance” -Dr. Benjamin Hardy Building confidence empowers you to trust in your ability to overcome obstacles and make positive choices.

By acknowledging your strengths, learning from setbacks, and celebrating successes, you develop self-worth that fuels your commitment to a substance-free life.

Having confidence in ourselves and our pursuits means that we never have to justify to ANYONE why we want what we want or why we do what we do.

We want it because we want it, and we don’t ever have to justify it.

Suggestions: Always measure backward: At the end of each day, take 3 minutes and write down all the "wins" you had for the day. It's a great way to finish each day on a high. Write out a short list of three things you really WANT and don't justify WHY you want them. Go on to read about HOPE to make these three things come true.

Extra credit: Share them with a friend in recovery and have them do the same with you.

HOPE: Fueling the recovery journey

Hope provides the belief in a fulfilling, substance-free life, even in the face of challenges. It maintains a long-term vision, embracing support, and inspiring others. Hope sustains your commitment to sobriety, reminding you of the possibilities for growth, healing, and positive change.

How can you create hope right now?

  1. Have a clear vision or goal

  2. Believe that you will be able to achieve that goal

  3. Take small steps every day to get close to that goal (By doing this step, step #2 becomes possible)

Excitement, confidence, and hope are essential components of relapse prevention.

By embracing new experiences, believing in yourself, and creating hope, you reinforce your commitment to sobriety. Cultivate these positive elements and let them guide you on your journey towards lasting recovery.
